Custom Maple Dining Table in Falmouth
This ten-foot maple trestle table lives just steps from the beach in a beautiful, sunny Falmouth home. As the pictures show, the dining area is bathed in stunning natural light and the interior designer we worked with on this project wanted to make sure that whatever table we delivered would remain in keeping with the bright surroundings. It had to be substantial and refined without being fussy. We landed on the design you see here after a thorough examination of styles that fit the bill and the preferences of the homeowners.
Tables built from milled maple boards, rather than single maple slabs, tend to be paler in coloration than the slabs, with more regular grain and typically much less figure. The drama and variety of a maple slab can be stunning, to be sure, but they aren’t the right choice for every space. The designer and her clients wanted a more subdued look for this table, and the creamy whites, pale tans, and soft golds of milled maple were just the ticket.
Because maple finished with oil tends to yellow over time, we and our clients elected to use Cannon Hill’s signature 2K urethane spray finish. We usually recommend this finish with maple for just this reason, and it’s also our choice on furniture that will likely be subject to substantial wear and tear. Our in-house spray finishers mix and apply the two-part, matte product right here in our Roxbury workshop for each piece. The spray-on urethane offers the ultimate in protection and durability, ensuring the beauty of the work for years to come.
The base for this table is a trestle style that harkens to centuries-old traditions of furniture making, but with a clean, modern twist. Here at Cannon Hill, we aim to position ourselves at the intersection of legacy-grade quality and forward-thinking design. Trestles in this style offer the sense of gravity present in long-established styles, but with a sleeker sensibility. Just as importantly, they’re also a tremendously efficient system for maximizing seating area while minimizing the overall footprint of the table – with no legs to get in the way, chairs push in tight, and guests can sit anywhere around the table.
