Custom Live Edge Dining Table in Beverly

Custom Live Edge Dining Table in Beverly

We’re very fortunate in getting to work with the absolute highest caliber of materials, so we see some of the most incredible live edge wood slabs around. Even with that background, though, we haven’t lost the ability to be amazed by the lumber that comes through our shop, and this table uses the sort of slab that forces work in our shop to a standstill just so we can admire it. With its dramatic outline, and intense figure, it was the perfect starting point for a table that would be the anchor in a beautiful dining room with a gorgeous view.

Our clients on this project knew they wanted a dramatic slab that would evoke the seaside location. We worked with them to find the one that would be just right, and as soon as they saw this one they knew it was right. It was a bold decision, for all the same reasons that it’s a show-stopping slab.

Not everyone would choose a table with such a varied outline, but in this case, for these clients it was just what they were looking for. There’s something of driftwood in the appearance of this slab, so it fit the “tone” of the table they wanted. But functionality, as always, has to win the day, so we went out to their home with a cardboard mock-up of the table, with all its curves and deviations, even before we purchased the slab. That alone took some effort – mimicking this unpredictable and uneven shape from photographs alone – but it was absolutely worthwhile.

With live-edge tables, one has to be careful about where the curves and outcroppings land, to ensure that people sitting at the table don’t wind up too far out of line with one another. Having to crane your neck or even turn in your seat just to speak to the person next to you is a sure-fire way to ruin a meal, so we never want chairs to be too far in front of or behind each other. Taking the mock-up into their home ensured that everyone involved was comfortable with exactly where diners would land in relation to one another, and, as it turns out, this slab creates a very natural seating arrangement even with all its irregularities. That’s not the sort of thing that you want to gamble on, though, so we did our homework and planned everything out beforehand; that’s just the way we do things.
